The Hollywood Bowl Turns 85

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — On the evening of July 11th, 1922, citizens of the greater Los Angeles region settled into the wooden benches arrayed on the natural hills to listen to the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Alfred Hertz for the first performance in the then-new Hollywood Bowl.

85 years later, the legendary Hollywood venue is still going strong. The Hollywood Bowl, with a capacity of nearly 18,000, is one of the largest natural outdoor amphitheatres in the world and serves as a summer home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic since it opened.

The Bowl has played host to plethora of legendary performers as well: Sinatra, Pavarotti, Streisand, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Abbott and Costello. Baryshnikov has danced there, as has Fred Astaire. Garth Brooks, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Elton John, Al Jolson, and Judy Garland have all performed at the Bowl along with a multitude of others.

The Bowl is ready to continue in the vanguard as one of the premier live entertainment venues in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan region. A recent upgrade, which saw the iconic band shell remodeled to provide more stage space, improve acoustics, upgrade to the sound system and provided for more backstage amenities was completed in 2004.
