TORONTO (CelebrityAccess) — The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada presented veteran Canadian rocker Burton Cummings with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 29th annual SOCAN Awards in Toronto on Monday night.
In accepting the award, which was presented by producer and artist Daniel Lanois, Cummings told the audience of about 300 industry figures: “I’m proudest of this award for getting it from Daniel Lanois. He is a true renaissance man, a true artist. Go listen to [the Daniel Lanois album] ‘Acadie'”
“I have made 33 albums, and I want to do another one,” Cummings added.
Best known for his work as the frontman and keyboardist for the classic rock band The Guess Who, Cummings went on to a successful solo career, as well as forming other groups, including Bachman-Cummings (with another Guess Who alum Randy Bachman) and the Burton Cummings Band.
Also honored at the awards ceremony was Sarah McLachlan, who was presented with the Global Inspiration Award for her accomplishments as a singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and advocate for women.
Other SOCAN Achievement Award recipients included Shawn Mendes, and Rihanna, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar co-writer Frank Dukes, both of whom earned Songwriter of the Year Awards.
