TORONTO, Ontario (CelebrityAccess) — On Tuesday, the Canadian Academy of Recordings Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced the nominations for the 2019 Juno Awards, with Shawn Mendes leading the charge with six picks.

Mendes was nominated for fan choice, single, album, artist, songwriter, and pop album, barely managing to beat out The Weeknd, who picked up nods for fan choice, single, album, artist of the year, and R&b/soul recording.

First-time nominees for this year included bülow, who picked up nods for fan choice, single, breakthrough artist and pop album, and Ontario natives Loud Luxury, who were recognized with nominations for also up for fan choice, single, breakthrough group, and dance recording.

Notably Canadian rapper Drake, who had a huge year with his album Scorpion, was not included in the list. According to the CBC, Drake was not included as he did not submit his name for consideration for the awards, marking the second straight year he’s done so.

“It’s unfortunate he chose not to submit, and hopefully, he will come back,” CARAS President and CEO Alan Reid told the CBC.

The Juno Awards will take place on March 16 & 17 as part of the Canadian Music Week festivities. CARAS announced that Sarah McLachlan had signed on to serve as a host for the event in 2019.
