SAN ANTONIO (CelebrityAccess) – Country music icon, Willie Nelson, announced in a recent interview with San Antonio news outlet KSAT, that he is officially done with smoking.

The 86-year-old, who has long been an active pot smoker and vocal advocate of the benefits of marijuana use, cited ongoing health issues as the cause for the change.

“I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful,” Nelson told KSAT. “I started smoking cedar bark, went from that to cigarettes to whatever, and that almost killed me. I don’t smoke anymore — take better care of myself.”

Nelson was forced to postpone the tail end of his tour back in August after he began experiencing difficulty breathing. He made his return to the road with a show on September 6 in Gilford, NH.

Nelson is scheduled to kick off the new year with a performance at the Balboa Theater in San Diego on January 3 followed by a handful of US dates that are slated to run through August.
