Bassey Pulls Out Of Mandela Gig

LONDON (VIP-NEWS) — Shirley Bassey has pulled out of a concert in London to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, a month after having an operation on her stomach.

The 71-year-old, who lives in Monaco, had been expected to recover in time for Friday's event in Hyde Park, but doctors have advised her not to travel.

Her spokesman Paul Carey said: "The Dame is hugely disappointed and was looking forward to the show immensely."

Dame Shirley's famous hits include Big Spender and History Repeating.

'Full recovery'

"On the advice of her surgeon, Dame Shirley Bassey will now not be able to perform as scheduled at the Nelson Mandela 46664 concert," Carey said.

"Dame Shirley has been advised not to travel at the present time, so as to aid her continued full recovery following surgery last month."

Amy Winehouse, who is undergoing medical treatment for emphysema, is still expected to sing at the gig in Hyde Park.

Dame Shirley has enjoyed chart success since the late 1950s and sang the theme tunes to three James Bond films.

Last year she performed at Glastonbury festival, where she arrived in a helicopter and wore diamond-encrusted Wellington boots, according to BBC
