CBGB’s To Shut Down Sept. 30th

NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — Legendary New York rock club CBGB will close for good on September 30th, after waging a year-long losing battle with the venue’s landlord over a new lease.

A series of special shows are being organized by New York promoter Rocks Off to celebrate the club’s final weeks, with promises of “many of the artists who made CB’s famous,” according to Billboard.

The nonprofit landlord, the Bowery Resident’s Committee, has been feuding with CBGB owner Hilly Kristal, the committee’s only commercial resident, for years over back rent.

In an agreement made last December, Kristal agreed to vacate the space by October 31, 2006, only after the club’s rent was raised from $19,000 a month to $35,000. Kristal has not yet discussed if there are any plans to reopen the club in a new location. –by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
