Dave Holland Starts New Label Dare2 Records

(CelebrityAccess MediaWire) —

Jazz bassist Dave Holland has formed a partnership with Sunnyside Records to distribute his future recordings in the United States under his new label imprint Dare2 Records. Universal Music Jazz France will distribute these recordings outside of the United States. The first release will be Overdrive due on February 22.

"The formation of Dare2 Records is the realization of a long held idea to create my own independent record label," notes Holland. "The immediate goals are to provide an outlet for my recorded works and to secure world wide distribution through licensing."

"Artist-owned labels are not a new idea, the most successful of these being A&M records, started by trumpeter Herb Alpert. Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Horace Silver were also early pioneers with artist-owned labels. In the field of popular music, Prince, Björk and Dave Matthews are among many others following their lead. The rapidly changing landscape of the record industry and the addition of the Internet to the more conventional methods of distribution have made artist-owned labels a realistic goal, and at this stage in my life, it seemed to me that if I was going to do it, now is the time." –Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen
