Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Rules The Weekend Box Office


LOS ANGELES, Disney/Marvel's summer superhero blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a strong domestic opening, earning an estimated $145.0M in box office receipts in North America. That's in addition to the $123.8 million it generated in international markets over the weekend.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians has generated almost half a billion for Disney/Marvel in just 13 days since it made its first debut in Japan. The film a sequel to the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy, which in itself was a box office smash, earning more than $700 million for the studio.

Other films of note include the Indian-made fantasy-adventure sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion, which generated $47.2M and $3.2M domestically and Fate of the Furious, which added an estimated $38.6M worldwide over the weekend.
