No Virgin Mobile Free Fest For 2014

COLUMBIA, MD (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — Virgin Mobile FreeFest, the one day music festival produced by Seth Hurwitz IMP Productions, has ended its run.

The festival, originally held at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore in 2006, moved to the Merriweather Post Pavilion five years ago and in the wake of the financial crisis went 'free', offering tickets in exchange for donations to festival sponsor Virgin Mobile’s RE*Generation initiative to help homeless youth, or for volunteer work.

However, this year, Virgin Mobile appears to be looking for alternative means of helping the less fortunate.

“We’ll be making a difference, in a different way,” Virgin Mobile spokeswoman Jayne Wallace wrote in a statement. “Instead, Virgin Mobile will continue its tradition of helping make a difference and support the youth homelessness cause by making a significant donation directly to the Sasha Bruce RE*Generation House.”

Past lineups for the festival included both established and developing indie rock and pop artists, as well as a stage for electronic music. Past artists include Skrillex, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Santigold, Alabama Shakes and the Ben Folds Five.

While the festival is a dead issue for 2014, there are some inklings of hope for the popular event with promoter Seth Hurwitz saying:

"The Freefest was this fantastic product of a crossroads of Branson and some very creative people at Virgin. The mixture got shaken up every year, and it always settled at the last possible moment for that year. That was part of the spontaneous magic that everyone could pick up on I think. Unfortunately, the pieces are not all there right now with Virgin. Whether they are again who knows. But the Freefest concept is fantastic and we are exploring options to continue it at Merriweather.” – Staff Writers
