The Marquee, one of the most famous and historic venue names in the world, has run into trouble a mere 5 months after re-launching at brand new premises in Islington, North London. On January 20 in the High Court an Administration Order was made in respect of Marquee Trading LTD trading as The Marquee Club. This means that the club will continue to operate for a period overseen by administrators authorised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
The packed opening night featuring Primal Scream promised the continuation of a fine tradition, but disagreements between the partners, including the company fronted by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame and restaurateur Mark Fuller, produced a situation in which the club struggled to establish a firm booking policy and identity. The actual facilities and the sound quality of the room however have received great praise from the acts that have played the club. I saw The Yarbirds play there last week, and they did sound great, I expect the same of The Blockheads tonight (Wednesday) It is hoped that the problems will be resolved very soon involving new or possibly previously involved operators, who will continue and progress the revival of a great name -we cannot afford to lose venues like this.
