BIRMINGHAM, AL (CelebrityAccess) — Russian activist collective Pussy Riot announced they are planning a concert in Alabama to benefit planned parenthood after the state passed some of the nation’s toughest anti-abortion laws.
According to Al.com, the feminist dissidents are slated to perform July 11 at Saturn, a music venue in Birmingham.
A tweet by the band says that proceeds from the show will go to support Planned Parenthood and the Yellowhammer Fund, which provides funding for anyone seeking care at one of the state’s three abortion clinics.
Pussy Riot gained international fame for staging protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s state church. Two alleged members of the group Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, were arrested in 2012 and charged with hooliganism after staging a protest in a Russian church.
Last year, they made headlines again after four purported members of the group dressed as police officers and ran into the pitch during a televised World Cup soccer match.
A statement issued from Pussy Riot said the aim of the protest was to liberate political prisoners, stop arresting protesters at public rallies, for authorities to stop fabricating criminal charges, and to allow political competition in Russia.
