SEOUL, South Korea (CelebrityAccess) — K-Pop star and actor Park Yoo-chun escaped jail after he was sentenced to 10 months in prison on Tuesday, with the sentence suspended two years, after he admitted to purchasing and using an illegal drug.

The 32-year-old entertainer was also fined 1.4 million won, (around $1,200 USD) and sentenced to 2 years of probation as well as drug treatment counseling.

“Drug-related crimes should be harshly punished due to severe addiction and harmful effects on individuals and society,” presiding judge Kim Doo-hong said in the ruling, according to the Korea Times.

However, the judge noted that it was a first offense for Park and his contrition for his behavior merited a suspended sentence

Park, who was a former member of the K-Pop boybands JYJ and TVXQ, was indicted on May 17 on charges of purchasing 1.5 grams of methamphetamine and using the drug with his socialite ex-fiancée Hwang Ha-na on multiple occasions.

Park fell under investigation after Hwang was arrested on April 6 on charges of selling and using the drug in 2015.

Shortly after his indictment, Park announced that he was retiring from his life as a professional entertainer. Park is one of several high profile figures in the world of K-Pop who have been charged with drug offenses in recent months.
