J&R Music World, the electronics store located a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center, is set to reopen October 22 with a completely new inventory. There was an unbelievable amount of soot and dust that came into the store after the terrorist attacks as the store was used as a refuge for firefighters and the police.
According to Rochelle Friedman, a co-owner with her husband and the "R" in J&R Music World, no product remains from September. The destroyed merchandise cost "tens of millions of dollars" and was covered by insurance. However, insurance did not cover lost sales; lost revenues have been estimated at $32 million since Sept. 11. The company's mail order and Web sales divisions were not interrupted.
