Kendrick Lamar Wins The 2018 Pulitzer For Music

NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — Grammy-award winning rapper Kendrick Lamar can add one more accolade to his list of accomplishments – a coveted Pulitzer Prize for Music.

On April 16th, Lamar was announced as the 2018 recipient of the honor for his album “Damn” which the Pulitzer folks described as “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”

Lamar is the first hip-hop artist to win the Pulitzer for music, which typically goes to a musician from the world of classical or jazz. Last year, the prize went to Da Yu for his opera “Angel’s Bone” and in 2016, jazz artist Henry Threadgill won for his “In for a Penny, In for a Pound” piece.

“Damn” is Lamar’s 4th studio album and has already earned him a Grammy for best rap album, while the album’s cut “Humble” picked up Grammys for best rap performance, best rap song, and best music video.

The Pulitzer for Music is one of seven Pulitzer Prizes awarded annually for Letters, Drama, and Music. The prize was first issued in 1943.
