ATLANTA (CelebrityAccess) — Classic rock guitarist Rick Derringer faces a criminal charge after he was discovered carrying a loaded weapon in his carry-on bag after a flight.
The gun was discovered after a separate magazine containing ammunition was detected by an x-ray machine, prompting a more thorough search after Derringer returned to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from Cancun.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by the Associated Press, Derringer, 69, thought that he was allowed to carry his firearm on the plane. Derringer was returning to the U.S., landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from Cancun.
Derringer told an air marshal that he'd carried the gun in his carry-on bag on numerous occasions in the past. Federal regulations require handguns carried on flights to be unloaded and stored in hard-sided containers that are declared to the airline when checked, according to the TSA. Ammunition is also prohibited in carry-on bags. – Staff Writers
