Vancouver's Newest Venue

VANCOUVER (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The Vancouver Concert Hall and Theatre Society has unveiled plans for a 1,950 seat concert hall at the site of the Vancouver Art Gallery, according to Vancouver's News1130.

The plan hinges on the City of Vancouver moving the gallery to a proposed new site at the old bus terminal on Cambie Street.

Ron Stern with the Theatre Society says the concert hall itself would be underneath the Georgia Street Plaza, and home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.  "Covered with glass. The sun would come in. You'd walk into a wonderful theatre, somewhat of a theatre-in-the-round,  called a vineyard theatre. Much closer than it's been in most theatres conventionally, it would be very exciting, very intimate," according to News1130.

He adds reaction to the Bing Thom design unveiled on Friday was great.  "Very positive, everyone is quite excited. Terrifically exciting. The city has long had a need for a new concert hall."

Stern says the art gallery building would stay intact but the building would take on a new life, according to News1130. "Use a portion of the main building for a lobby that would be open to the public all the time, with the balance being used for restaurants, boutiques, and other cultural uses, including galleries."

The estimated cost is $225 million, according to News1130.VANCOUVER (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The Vancouver Concert Hall and Theatre Society has unveiled plans for a 1,950 seat concert hall at the site of the Vancouver Art Gallery, according to Vancouver's News1130.
