Vince McMahon: The XFL Is Returning

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has announced that his XFL football league, which suffered a sudden and painful defeat in 2001, will be back in action in 2020.
McMahon said it would be a “faster, more fan-centric game,” with eight teams of 40-man rosters, according to SBNation. The league would promote player safety and simplicity and would be family friendly.

McMahon said the league would be about “playing football” and, asked several questions about players kneeling in protest to various causes, said the code of conduct for his league would be about football and not social concerns.

SBNation noted McMahon tipped his hand that he wanted to revive the failed league with a recent sale of $100 million in WWE stock to launch Alpha Entertainment which had investments “including professional football.”

The XFL, with star player HeHateMe, was by all accounts a hot mess. It launched to strong ratings and an interested public but withered after fans became confused to whether it was pure football, choreographed entertainment, or both. However, according to a “30 For 30” ESPN special, the opening scramble for the kickoff (rather than a coin toss) was a huge hit, but caused a tremendous amount of injuries.

Meanwhile, former Giants quarterback Jared Lorenzen, who has gained 320 pounds since his NFL days, says he wants to join the XFL just because of the nicknames he’s cooked up like “HeAteMe” and “Hefty Lefty.”

“I wanted to do this since the day we stopped the other one,” McMahon told ESPN in an exclusive interview. “A chance to do it with no partners, strictly funded by me, which would allow me to look in the mirror and say, ‘You were the one who screwed this up,’ or ‘You made this thing a success.'”
