Veteran rapper DMX has reportedly checked into a rehab facility and canceled several upcoming performances.
“In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his canceled shows and thanks to his fans for their continued support,” the rapper’s team posted via Instagram.
The 48-year-old rap icon had been scheduled to perform at a Three 6 Mafia reunion in Memphis on Saturday night, as well as the New York edition of the Rolling Loud festival on Sunday, but missed both shows.
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, has been public about his past battles with substance abuse and has been arrested multiple times on drug-related charges.
Earlier this year, after he was released from prison on tax evasion charges, he talked about his addiction to cocaine during an interview on the nationally syndicated radio show Big Boy’s Neighborhood.
“I don’t do anything,” he told the interviewer. “I’ll have a drink here and there. That was never a problem. That’s about it. Cocaine. I think we kinda knew that was the problem. Anybody in here that didn’t know? Of course, it was problem. I got in trouble and all that shit. It’s not worth it. I spent too much time doing things. It’s just not worth it.”
