Tom Wilson To Receive The Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award

TORONTO (CelebrityAccess) — Organizers for Canadian Music Week announced that the legendary Canadian artist Tom Wilson will be the 2024 recipient of the CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award.

Wilson will be presented with the award during a ceremony at the 23rd annual Jim Beam Indie Awards, which are scheduled to take place at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall on June 6th as part of Canadian Music Week.

The award is presented each year to a Canadian artist, duo or group in recognition of their social activism and support for humanitarian causes. Wilson is being recognized for the creation of the Tom Wilson Bursary was established in 2020 to support indigenous students from Ontario secondary schools who are completing the first year of an undergraduate program.

Wilson discussed his own indigenous heritage in his memoir, Beautiful Scars, published by Penguin/Random House, which has become a bestseller in Canada. In the memoir, Wilson talks about learning about his Indigenous heritage and his connection to his great aunt Bunny Wilson, who helped to raise him and whose charitable nature served as an inspiration for Tom.

Wilson is best known as the founder of the popular rock band Junkhouse but is also respected for his work with the bands Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond.

The 2024 Jim Beam INDIE Awards will be hosted by Jamar McNeil of CHUM FM and will include performances by Tim Hicks, Finger Eleven, and more to be announced soon.
