PARIS, France (CelebrityAccess) — MHD, one of France’s most popular rap artists, has been arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection to a death in the French capital of Paris.
According to the Guardian, MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, was charged along with three other men with the death of a man who was “kicked beaten and stabbed” in July by a group of individuals in what police characterized as a fight between gangs from the 10th and 19th arrondissements.
Police alleged that MHD’s car was identified at the scene and he was arrested and charged in connection with the crime on Tuesday, according to Le Monde.
MHD comes from the 19th arrondissements, as marked by his album 19.
MHD’s lawyer Elise Arfi said that his client was not involved in the brawl and told the Guardian that “his presence at the scene of the crime has not been proven.” Arfi added that she planned to appeal MHD’s detention, citing his “lack of a judicial record.”
MHD was born in France and worked as a food delivery person before he developed a music career as a pioneer in the world of Afro-trap music. His albums, MHD (2016) and 19 (2018), have cracked the top ten charts in Paris and he has landed endorsement deals with high profile corporate partners such as Puma.
MHD was set for a European tour later this month, which included 4 now canceled shows in Germany, followed by a North American run, which was set to kick off on Feb. 15th in Washington D.C. at the U Street Music Hall.
