New Zealand Singer, Music Attorney And Crowded House Co-Manager Malcolm Black Dies

NEW ZEALAND (CelebrityAccess) Malcolm Black ONZM, 58, former lead singer of the Netherworld Dancing Toys and prominent music industry attorney, died in Auckland May 10.

Black was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2017 and his daughter Ruby was married May 4 so he could be present for the ceremony, according to 1 News. He was widely known for the song “For Today (I Remember Your Smile),” which earned him the APRA Silver Scroll in 1985.

He retired from his music career in the 1980s to become New Zealand’s first specialist music attorney and a key adviser on the establishment and subsequent review of New Zealand on Air music scheme, according to 1 News. He worked with artists like Bic Runga, Dimmer, and Brooke Fraser and was co-manager of Neil Finn and Crowded House.

He became the NZ Writer Director on the APRA AMCOS board in 2016 and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to music in 2018.

Black recorded an album, Songs For My Family, earlier this year and recently performed at the Silver Scroll Awards ceremony.
