LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) Criticism of Game of Thrones’ final season is reaching critical mass, moving beyond the realm of a meme war to that of an online petition asking HBO to remake the final season.
The show, which has become a cornerstone of HBO’s programming for eight years, wraps this Sunday with a truncated final season. Because the show has outpaced the source material of writer George R.R. Martin, the writing has been led by “D&D” – David Benioff and D.B. Weiss – who have had to predict how the book series will end.
Many think they have thought wrong, with the Internet filled with memes that harshly attack the two writers for throwing away character arcs, quick and lazy writing, and some deux ex machina plot devices. Even the actors have hinted that they are disappointed with the direction the series has gone. Rotten Tomatoes shows that this year’s fare has the lowest rating of any season.
“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” reads the petition’s text. “This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”
The petition has a goal fo 500,000 signatures and had 412,000 at press time.
