(CelebrityAccess) — Veteran rocker Rick Springfield announced he’s postponing a destination concert event in the Dominican Republic after at least 13 international travelers have died there in recent months after contracting a mysterious illness.
In a statement published on his website, Springfield said the “Rick Springfield & Friends” event which was originally set to take place in Punta Cana in November, has been moved to the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun, Mexico and will now take place in 2020.
“We have been closely monitoring the situation in the Dominican Republic,” Springfield wrote. “In an abundance of caution and for the peace of mind and well-being of my fans, band, and crew, the ‘Rick Springfield & Friends’ event in Punta Cana is being rescheduled to take place at Hard Rock Hotel Cancun in 2020. New dates will be determined as soon as possible. We hope to have this announcement within the next two weeks.”
Springfield went on to apologize to his fans for causing any inconvenience and added that guests who are unable to attend the rescheduled dates will be provided with a full refund after the new dates are announced.
“While this decision has not been easy, the safety and well-being of our amazing fans, band, and crew will always be the most important consideration in any situation,” he added. “Sending our love and best wishes to all of our friends in the Dominican Republic. Thank you for your patience while we work out the new details. Look forward to seeing you soon in Mexico! Rick.”
Two American tourists, David Harrison and Robert Bell Wallace, died after becoming ill while staying at the Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana in April, two of 13 American tourists who have died in the Dominican Republic in the last year. As well, 47 Oklahoma residents reported becoming violently ill while attending a Jimmy Buffett destination event in Punta Cana in April.
