LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Lionsgate’s well-reviewed action-drama “Angel Has Fallen” took the top spot in a quiet weekend at the box office, with a debut of $21.250 million according to estimates compiled by Comscore.
The R-rated action flick features Gerard Butler as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning, who is framed for attempting to assassinate the president and must evade his former colleagues while he works to unravel the identity of the true culprit.
“Angel” features Ric Roman Waugh, who previously helmed Felon (2008), Snitch (2013) and most recently, Shot Caller (2017). The film also stars Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, Nick Nolte, and Danny Huston.
Last week’s champion, Universal’s “Good Boys” slid to second place but still earned $11.75 million from North American theaters. The Seth Rogan-produced comedy has earned a global cume to date of $49.0M, per Comscore.
Sony’s faith-based film “Overcomer” debuted at #3, earning $8.2 million 1,723 locations over the weekend. Written and directed by Alex Kendrick, the film stars Priscilla Shirer, Shari Rigby, Jack Sterner, Cameron Arnett & Aryn Wright-Thompson and tells the tale of a high-school basketball coach who volunteers to help a troubled youth.
