CONCORD, NC (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in North Carolina will soon be home to more than just its common performances, conferences and audiences — soon it will host a 96-bed temporary jail. The temporary jail will be put into place to help ease overcrowding at a nearby correctional facility, at a cost of $1.7 million, until a new permanent jail is finished in early 2008
Once the new jail is completed, the temporary facility will be used for storage and showers for recreational vehicle users and vendors.
After approval from arena managers, the county leaders considered other options to help ease tensions among neighbors and objectors. Many in the area fear potential inmate escapes and lower property values.
The jail would be obstructed from public view, and placed behind the 6,000-capacity venue. It would meet all safety standards and pose no security threats, holding only the lowest-risk prisoners, and erecting a razor-wire fence around the perimeter. –by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
