Hidden Figures, Stranger Things Top SAG Awards

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — The Screen Actors Guild Awards awards took place in Los Angeles on Sunday night, with "Hidden Figures" and Netflix's "Stranger Things" winning the top prizes for Cinema and Television, respectively.

Denzel Washington, who held the somewhat dubious record for the most nominated actor without a win, finally managed to collect a trophy when he won the award for Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in the film "Fences."

Emma Stone, as many expected, proved to be a lock for Female Actor in a Leading Role for critical favorite "La La Land."

It was also a big night for video streaming service Netflix, which saw multiple of its shows receive awards in addition to Stranger Things. John Lithgow and Claire Foy won awards for their portrayal of Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill in "The Crown," while "Orange Is the New Black" took top honors for Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Notable shutouts include Casey Affleck, who turned heads last year for his the conflicted janitor Lee Chandler in "Manchester By The Sea". The SAG Awards are often given some oracular weight for the Oscar Awards, which take place next month, but Washington's win for Fences makes Affleck's Best Actor Oscar seem like less of a foregone conclusion.

The awards ceremony took place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California with Jimmy Fallon, stepping in for Ricky Gervais who hosted the festivities last year. – Staff Writers
