WICHITA, KS (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — According to the Wichita Eagle, Sedgwick County voters approved a one percent tax increase for 30 months in order to pay for a new downtown arena.
Rather than spend $120 million to renovate the worn down Kansas Coliseum, located outside the city of Wichita, voters chose to spend an extra $64 million for a completely new building. The proposed arena will seat 15,000 – 5,000 more than the Kansas Coliseum – and includes a $24 million reserve fund in order to cover projected operating losses.
The decision came as a relief to those who saw similar proposals fail in 1993 and 2002. Despite this success, there are still several important details that must be hammered out. Naming rights, sponsorship deals and the location of the arena are all issues that have not yet been attended to. –by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
